Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is being created to introduce broadcast journalism to the Graduate Diploma/MA in Journalism programme in Semester 1 in light of feedback from media professionals, and to improve the current and future employment prospects of the students. The purpose of the module is to give students an historical perspective on radio and to develop their professional practice skills in broadcasting

Syllabus:

The module examines the current organisational structures of radio in Ireland and it analyses the changes that have come about in broadcast journalism. The impact of broadcast journalism on democracy is also examined. The module examines radio research techniques, interviewing for audio and scriptwriting. Practical classes focus on the development of professional journalism practice skills for audio-based outputs and web casting. These classes are held in the radio studio and in a dedicated newsroom. Writing and presentation skills for radio, telephone recording procedures and editing of audio and visual reportage are examined

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the organisational structures of radio in Ireland and the impact of broadcast journalism on democracy. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of radio and web news operations, and an understanding of the complexities of working on the production desk; in the news studio, and out in the field. Apply a range of broadcasting skills to writing news scripts for radio and video reports for the web; conduct interviews, and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Apply a range of broadcasting skills to operating appropriate broadcast hardware and software to produce and edit news reports for the radio and the web; present news reports and interviews on radio, and video for the web.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * Show an understanding of the value of good research before conducting journalism suitable for broadcast. * Display an appreciation of the values of radio and television production and on air presentation. * Demonstrate an ability to work in a news team - featuring on air and production staff - and demonstrate an appreciation of the skills acquired and the role played by each member of the team. * Appreciate the ethical and legal issues associated with broadcast journalism

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Teaching is in the form of lectures and labs in the dedicated newsroom and the radio studio. Assessment is based on the practical production of short news reports for radio and short video news reports for the web. The students will also work in teams preparing short news bulletins, assignments and reflections on learning
